As a general rule, the budget can be broken down as follows:

3% - Ceremony - location fee, officiate fee, marriage license, ring pillow

46% - Reception - reception site, food, drinks, rentals, cake, favors, decorations

10% - Attire and makeup - dress, veil, tiara, shoes, jewelry, tuxedo, garter, makeup and hair

10% - Flowers - ceremony, bouquets, corsages, centerpieces, flower girl basket

10% - Music - DJ, band, sound system rentals

10% - Photography - photographer, videographer, albums, disposable cameras

5% - Transportation and lodging - limo, guest shuttle, parking, wedding night lodging

3% - Stationary - invitations, response cards, thank you notes, guest book

3% - Gifts - bridesmaid and groomsman, parent, gift baskets for out of town guests

Wedding planners are an added expense but can reduce the level of stress you might experience.  Many wedding planners charge between 10% and 15% of the total wedding budget. Some wedding planners charge by the hour.  Be sure to get a contract with all the services they are to provide to avoid confusion and frustration.
